Your First Facial at AT THE BEAUTY BAR — Exactly What to Expect

You booked your first clinical facial. Then you started overthinking it. What do you wear. Do you talk. Will they judge your skincare shelf. Do you tip. What if you fall asleep. What if you cry (a lot of people cry on the bed — the good kind). This is the honest, minute-by-minute walkthrough of a first visit to AT THE BEAUTY BAR in Caulfield South. No gatekeeping, no surprises, no upsell pressure.
Before you arrive: the two things worth knowing
First, come in whatever you were already wearing. Genuinely. Activewear, work clothes, sundress — none of it matters. You will change from the waist up into a soft robe and lie on a heated bed under a linen blanket. Your bra can stay on; most clients unclip it and pull the straps down for shoulder access.
Second, keep any product you applied that morning. We ask — we do not mind. Knowing that you used a vitamin C serum, a niacinamide toner, or SPF 50 tells us something about your barrier and what will layer safely on top today. If you are running late and forgot everything, that is fine too. Your therapist is not scoring your morning routine.
Minute 0–10: Arrival and consultation
The studio is at 25 Teak Street, Caulfield South. There is free on-street parking directly outside and Caulfield train station is an 8-minute walk. Push open the door, we will hear you, and there will be a warm greeting waiting. If it is your first time you will sit for 5–10 minutes and answer a short intake form on an iPad while herbal tea or filtered water is brought to you.
The consultation itself is conversational, not clinical. We ask three things: what has been happening with your skin lately, what has already worked or backfired, and what a genuinely great outcome would look like for you in six months. There is no "right" answer. We are not looking for you to have a 12-product routine, and we are absolutely not going to raise an eyebrow if your entire routine is a supermarket cleanser and "whatever moisturiser was on sale." Every therapist has been there.
Minute 10–15: The room and the bed
You move into the treatment room. Warm neutral lighting, subtle music, a diffuser going gently. The therapist steps out for two minutes while you change into the robe and get under the linen blanket. The bed is heated. You will not be cold at any point in the treatment.
Minute 15–60 (approximately): The treatment itself
What happens next depends on which facial you booked. For a first visit, most clients start with the 60-minute [Reset Facial](/services/reset). Here is the sequence you can expect:
1. Skin analysis under proper lighting — 60 seconds looking at your skin at close range. We are checking hydration, oil distribution, texture, redness, and any active concerns. No pressure to explain anything.
2. Double cleanse — an oil-based cleanser first, then a gel or milk depending on your skin. Long, slow, with a light lymphatic massage. This is often the first moment where clients close their eyes and settle.
3. Enzymatic exfoliation — a gentle mask or leave-on gel that lifts dead surface cells without any abrasion. Zero stinging.
4. Extraction (only if needed) — we do not force extractions if your skin is not ready. If we go in, you may feel light pressure but never anything sharp. We never leave you with red marks or bruises.
5. Targeted actives — a serum, a mask, or an infusion tailored to your consultation answers. Vitamin C if you mentioned dullness. Niacinamide if you mentioned redness. Hyaluronic if you mentioned tightness.
6. Facial massage — around 10 to 15 minutes. This is the part most first-timers do not expect. Face, neck, and décolletage massage using rolling ceramic wands, or hand technique with balm. Circulation improves, cortisol drops, and honestly, some clients fall asleep here.
7. LED therapy — 10 to 20 minutes under a medical-grade LED panel. Red for calm and collagen. Blue for acne. Near-infrared for barrier repair. You lie still, eyes covered with pads. This is when most people genuinely fully switch off.
8. Moisturiser, eye cream, SPF, lip balm — the finish. Then a slow sit-up.
Minute 60–75: Debrief and home routine
You get back into your clothes and sit on the couch again with a fresh drink. This is when we do a 10-minute at-home routine review. Not to sell you every product on the shelf — genuinely to write down the 4 to 6 things your skin actually needs for the next month. If your existing products are good, we say so and do not push. If we recommend something, it will be because we watched your barrier response on the bed and know what will work.
You can pay by card or Apple Pay (no cash needed). Tipping is not expected in Australia — appreciated, never assumed.
About downtime
For the [Glow Facial](/services/glow), [Reset Facial](/services/reset), and Ultimate Experience: zero downtime. You can go straight back to work, put makeup on, meet friends. Slight flush for the first 1–2 hours is normal and looks like a light workout blush.
For a peel or [microneedling](/services/microneedling): 24–48 hours of pink skin, no makeup for 24 hours, no gym / sauna / swimming pool for 48 hours. We tell you before you book, so there are never surprises.
The 24-hour rule (before and after)
Before your appointment: skip any new active ingredient you have not used before. Do not exfoliate that morning. No fake tan the day before. If you have Botox scheduled — get the facial first, Botox afterwards.
After your appointment: no aggressive exfoliants for 48 hours, SPF 50 the next morning without fail (even in winter), and drink an extra 500ml of water that night. Your skin has been well-hydrated already; the water helps you hold onto it.
What a first visit usually costs
The 45-minute Glow Facial starts from $88. The 60-minute Reset Facial starts from $124. The 90-minute Ultimate Experience starts from $265. Add-ons (LED, cold hammer, extra microcurrent) sit between $30 and $60. There is no consultation fee — we build the treatment plan into your booked time.
About 60% of first-time clients walk out with one or two products from the Murad range. About 30% walk out with nothing. About 10% walk out having asked about the [monthly membership](/membership) because it pays for itself after the second facial. All three are completely normal. Nothing about your first visit is designed to funnel you into anything you did not ask for.
