The Melbourne SPF Bible: The 8 Sunscreens I Actually Recommend to My Clients

Australia has the highest skin cancer rate on earth and the strongest UV in the developed world. SPF isn't optional here — it's the single most transformative product in your routine. But not every SPF is worth putting on your face. Here are the eight I genuinely recommend to clients across every skin type, without brand deals or affiliate incentives.
Mineral SPF (my daily-driver category)
Mineral SPFs use zinc oxide and/or titanium dioxide to physically reflect UV. They're gentler on reactive skin, safer in pregnancy, and don't destabilise vitamin C serums underneath. Cons: some feel heavier, some leave a white cast on deeper skin tones.
1. Ultra Violette Queen Screen SPF 50+
Australian, cosmetically elegant, 100% mineral. My personal daily driver. Sits perfectly under makeup. Bit expensive — worth it.
2. Skinstitut Age Defence SPF 50+
Zinc-based, includes peptides, made in Australia. Excellent value at ~$45. My most-recommended for clients on a budget.
3. Neutrogena Sheer Zinc SPF 50+
Drugstore price, TGA-listed, strong mineral formula. Great for teenagers and casual daily use.
Chemical SPF (for oil-free, invisible finish)
Chemical SPFs use compounds like octinoxate and avobenzone that absorb UV. They tend to feel weightless and disappear on skin. Cons: less pregnancy-friendly, some can sting reactive skin, more likely to react with other actives.
4. La Roche-Posay Anthelios Invisible Fluid SPF 50+
Cosmetically the best chemical SPF I've ever used. Perfect for oily / combination skin. My recommendation for anyone who "hates the feel of sunscreen."
5. Cancer Council Face Day Wear SPF 50+
Australian, TGA-listed, ~$18. Perfectly fine for daily use.
Tinted SPF (my recommendation for pigmentation clients)
Tinted SPFs contain iron oxides, which block visible light — a specific UV band that triggers melasma. If pigmentation is your concern, this category is genuinely non-negotiable.
6. ISDIN Fotoprotector Fusion Water Color
Spanish, ~$60, unbeatable for melasma clients. Iron oxides + high SPF + weightless finish.
7. Ultra Violette Fave Fluid SPF 50+ Skinscreen (Tinted)
Australian, gorgeous colour range, minimal white cast.
8. Mecca Cosmetica To Save Face SPF 50+ Sun Serum (Tinted)
Available at Mecca, elegant tinted finish, works as a light foundation on no-makeup days.
What I look for in an SPF
- SPF 50+ / PA++++ — non-negotiable in Australia
- TGA-listed — Australia has stricter SPF testing than the US. Look for the AUST L number
- Non-fragranced — for daily use, fragrance-free reduces sensitivity risk
- A texture I'll actually reapply — the SPF you'll reapply every 2 hours beats the SPF that's cosmetically perfect but stays in the drawer
How to actually apply enough
The recommended amount for a face is 1/4 teaspoon (about a 20-cent piece worth). Most people apply half that. If you're getting one bottle of SPF to last 6 months, you're not applying enough. A bottle should last 6-8 weeks with daily use.
Reapplication is the whole game
Morning application only covers you until about 11am under Australian UV. Reapply at lunch. Reapply again mid-afternoon if outdoors. Reapplication is more important than which brand you started with in the morning.
Best SPF-friendly products from our shop
Wear your SPF over: [Vita-C Glycolic Brightening Serum](/shop) (vitamin C stabilises SPF and boosts protection), [Cellular Hydration Barrier Repair Serum](/shop), [Nutrient-Charged Water Gel](/shop). Any of these three plus SPF is a genuinely complete morning routine.
The bottom line
Wear something every day. Reapply. Don't wait for a beach holiday to remember your face gets UV every time you walk to the coffee shop. Book a Melbourne skincare consultation if you want personal SPF recommendations for your specific skin type.
