Skincare in Your 40s: What Changes and What Should Change

In your 40s, the dominant force on your skin shifts from sun exposure to hormones. Oestrogen. Which has been quietly maintaining your collagen, hydration and elasticity for decades. Begins to decline. The visible effect is real: skin gets drier, finer, slower to recover.

What actually changes biologically:

  • Oestrogen decline during perimenopause reduces collagen production by ~30% in the first 5 years post-menopause.
  • Lipid loss in the skin barrier. Drier, more sensitive skin.
  • Slower cell turnover. Products and treatments take longer to show results.
  • Loss of subcutaneous fat in the face. Bone structure becomes more visible.
  • Changes in pigmentation. Melasma can flare, sun damage becomes more visible.

What to ADD to your routine:

1. A peptide serum. Peptides signal the skin to produce more collagen. Particularly effective alongside retinol.

2. A higher-concentration retinol. But used carefully. Three nights a week, with proper hydration support. Retinol is the most-evidenced anti-ageing ingredient that exists.

3. Hyaluronic acid + ceramide combination. Hydration is no longer optional.

4. Antioxidants in the morning. Vitamin C is the foundation, but consider adding vitamin E and ferulic acid for synergistic protection.

5. A richer moisturiser at night. The water-loss happens primarily during sleep. A barrier-rich cream limits it.

What to STOP doing:

  • Foaming sulfate cleansers (drying, barrier-stripping)
  • Daily exfoliation (your barrier can no longer afford it)
  • Expecting your 30s routine to deliver. It won't, and it's not your fault

In-clinic treatments that compound:

  • Collagen-stimulating treatments every 4-6 weeks. Microneedling or our Collagen Treatment
  • LED red and near-infrared to support collagen production and reduce inflammation
  • Hydration-focused facials with hyaluronic acid infusion
  • Targeted brightening for emerging pigmentation

The compounding principle:

Your 40s are when consistency stops being optional. Skin that gets a clinical treatment every 4-6 weeks for two years looks dramatically different from skin that gets one every 6 months. The science supports rhythm over intensity, every time.

Many of our most-loyal clients are women who started in their 40s and now, in their 50s, look and feel better than they did a decade ago. The work compounds.
