Large Pores: What Actually Shrinks Them (And What's Marketing)

Large Pores: What Actually Shrinks Them (And What's Marketing) — clinical skincare guide from AT THE BEAUTY BAR Caulfield South Melbourne

Pores don't open and close. They don't 'breathe.' Steam doesn't open them and cold water doesn't shrink them. Everything on Instagram about pore-closing hacks is theatre. What CAN change pore size — meaningfully and permanently — is a small set of specific interventions. Here's the honest guide.

Why pores look large

Three reasons, in order of frequency:

1. Sebum backup. Oil accumulates in the follicle, stretches the walls, and the pore looks bigger. This is the single most common cause and the most fixable.

2. Sun damage. UV degrades the collagen around each follicle, so the walls lose their ability to hold shape. This is the second most common cause after age 35.

3. Genetics. Some people's pore anatomy is just larger. This is the least fixable — but it's also less common than the first two.

What actually shrinks them

Salicylic acid (BHA) daily or three nights a week. BHA is oil-soluble, so it goes down into the follicle and dissolves the sebum that's stretching the wall. This alone can drop visible pore size by 20-30% in 8 weeks.

Niacinamide 5%. Directly regulates sebum production. Fewer oil traffic jams equals smaller pores.

Retinol. Increases cell turnover, so the follicle wall stops accumulating dead cells at the opening. Also rebuilds collagen around the pore, which restores structure.

Microneedling. The specific treatment for pores caused by sun damage or age. Micro-channels stimulate collagen around each follicle, tightening the walls. A 3-6 session series produces visible refinement.

AHA + BHA cleanser. Not the whole solution, but a great daily maintenance. [Murad AHA/BHA Exfoliating Cleanser](/shop) is a studio staple.

What doesn't work

Steam facials — feels great, does nothing to pore size. Pore strips — remove the top of a blackhead but don't shrink the pore. Ice water — momentary tightening only. Egg-white masks and other DIY hacks — no measurable effect. Charcoal cleansers — marketing.

The professional protocol

At AT THE BEAUTY BAR we recommend a 3-4 month plan for pore refinement:

Month 1: Daily BHA cleanser, 5% niacinamide serum, mineral SPF. First microneedling session.

Month 2: Add 0.25% retinol three nights a week. Second microneedling.

Month 3: Third microneedling. Reassess and lift retinol to 0.5%.

Month 4: Maintenance mode. Monthly Reset Facial with LED for barrier support.

Most clients see 30-50% visible reduction in pore size over this window. Bigger changes come from continued maintenance across 6-12 months.

The Melbourne factor

High UV means high collagen degradation around pores. If you're not wearing SPF 50+ daily, you're actively working against every serum. Melbourne UV is high enough year-round that even a July walk to the coffee shop is compounding pore damage.

Book a consult

Every client's pore situation is different — sebum-driven pores respond fastest, sun-damaged pores need microneedling, genetic pores need realistic expectation-setting. Book a consultation and we'll build the exact 3-month plan.

Rosacea-Friendly Skincare: What Actually Calms Redness (and What Makes It Worse)

Rosacea-prone skin calms down when the barrier is protected, inflammation is reduced, and triggers are minimized but it often worsens with over-exfoliation, harsh actives, heat, fragrance, and aggressive skincare routines. Rosacea is not simply “sensitive skin.” It is a chronic inflammatory condition where the skin becomes highly reactive, easily flushed, and less able to tolerate stress. Many people unknowingly make redness worse by chasing strong exfoliants, overusing active ingredients, or stripping the skin barrier in an attempt to “fix” the problem quickly. In reality, calming rosacea usually requires the opposite approach: gentle cleansing, consistent hydration, barrier-repair ingredients, and carefully selected anti-inflammatory actives that support the skin instead of overwhelming it. In this article, we break down what actually helps reduce visible redness, what ingredients and habits commonly trigger flare-ups, and how to build a rosacea-friendly skincare routine that keeps the skin calmer, stronger, and more comfortable long term.
