Australian Skin: Why Climate, Sun and Travel All Affect Your Routine
Most skincare advice you read online is written for European or American climates. They're not Australia. Our UV index, temperature swings, dry conditions and indoor air quality create a unique set of challenges that need a unique approach.
The Australian sun reality:
Australia has the highest UV index in the world during summer. Frequently topping 11 (extreme). Even on cloudy or "cool" days in Melbourne, UV-A penetrates clouds. Skin damage compounds without you noticing.
What this means for your routine:
- SPF 50 every single morning (not 30. The difference matters here)
- Reapplication every 2 hours when outdoors
- Mineral sunscreens (zinc, titanium dioxide) for sensitive skin
- Hat, sunglasses, long sleeves when UV is above 3. Yes, including in winter
The climate variability factor:
Melbourne's "four seasons in a day" isn't a meme. It's a real challenge for your skin barrier. Cold air outdoors + dry heating indoors strips moisture. Hot dry days + air conditioning does the same.
The fix: a barrier-supporting routine year-round.
- A ceramide moisturiser as your foundation
- Hyaluronic acid serum (drinks moisture from humid air; in dry conditions, layer with an occlusive)
- Avoid stripping cleansers. They're a barrier disaster in this climate
Air conditioning, heating, screens:
- Indoor air pulls moisture out of skin constantly
- Blue light from screens is being studied as a contributor to oxidative stress (still inconclusive but worth being mindful)
- A daily antioxidant serum (vitamin C in the morning, vitamin E or resveratrol at night) provides general protection
Travel-related skincare:
- Plane air is 1-10% humidity. Pre-flight: hyaluronic acid + occlusive cream. Pack a travel-size hydrating mist.
- Tropical destinations: lighter routine, but never skip SPF
- Cold destinations: switch to richer moisturiser, gentler cleanser
The Australian-specific essentials:
1. SPF 50 you'll actually use daily
2. A ceramide-based moisturiser
3. A vitamin C serum for morning antioxidant protection
4. A hyaluronic acid + ceramide layer before bed
5. One clinical treatment every 4-8 weeks to reset what daily life takes out of your skin
